IN EYTAN'S WORDS
ON MOKUME GANE
Lately, I've developed a deep appreciation for the art of Mokume Gane. My journey with Japanese art and culture isn't new; it all began when I was just sixteen in Israel, where I trained in Shotokan Karate under Sensei Bob Batwin. In 1989, I earned my san-dan (third black belt) from Sensei Ichikawa in Tokyo. Back in Israel, I took on the role of instructor and had the privilege of teaching over a hundred students.
The blend of Mokume Gane and Shotokan Karate creates a fascinating synergy: both are not merely professions but rather a lifestyle. They share a profound connection: crafting Mokume Gane requires a conversation between the artisan and the metals. If these metals are treated with the care they deserve, they can unite to form a cohesive masterpiece. Similarly, Karate fosters a dialogue with one's spirit, serving as an introspective journey where the inner and outer selves align.
I find immense joy in the challenge of crafting pieces through this technique, devoting considerable time to this captivating pursuit.
