Nikolina Kucan and Anthony Perkovic’s wedding was brimming with innovative ideas. The wedding’s urban, modern styling suited the industrial venue of The Substation in Victoria.
What made you choose your wedding venue?
We loved the loft style setting, arched windows and wrap around balconies. When you have a venue with such great architectural features you only need subtle decorations. We felt that the venue represented our modern style as a couple and lent itself to the warm and spirited atmosphere we wanted to create. I love industrial buildings and the venue encapsulated the perfect balance of utility and grandeur required for a wedding.

What is your favourite memory from the day and did you uphold any particular traditions?
One of the best memories I have is walking down the makeshift aisle towards Anthony. I felt so calm having let go of all the emotion and expectation of the wedding planning.
We upheld a special Croatian wedding tradition by presenting a sprig of rosemary to our guests as they entered the ceremony. This gesture reminds them of the important commitment of love about to be taken.
Describe your unique wedding cake idea.
Our wedding ‘cake’ consisted of 4 tiers of different flavoured dessert tubes. They were created by Burch & Purchese Sweet Studio and displayed on a Perspex tray.
What was the inspiration behind your wedding stationery?
Croatian lace doilies inspired our stationery. Simple line designs were arranged in a repeating pattern and printed on recycled brown card.
What were your wedding favours?
As both Anthony and I have Croatian background we wanted the wedding favours to reflect our heritage. Where my family is from it is tradition for the women to make all the desserts for a wedding. Most of these desserts are biscuits and some are festively decorated therefore we gave our guests little boxes of biscuits with thankyou notes fastened with string.
